From Cigar Enthusiast to Brand Owner
When I look back at Guy Fieri's rise, it's easy to forget that his win on The Next Food Network Star in 2006 wasn't the beginning of his success—it was simply the moment the rest of the country was introduced to him.
Long before the cameras started rolling, Fieri was already building a successful business career in California. In 1996, he co-founded Johnny Garlic's, a California-style pasta and grill concept that expanded into multiple locations. He later helped launch Tex Wasabi's, a unique fusion of barbecue and sushi. At that point, he wasn't a television personality at all. He was a restaurateur who understood operations, branding, and, most importantly, what everyday customers wanted from a dining experience.
That foundation would eventually become the blueprint for everything that followed. While many celebrity chefs built their reputations through fine dining or culinary accolades, Fieri built his around accessibility, personality, and a knack for connecting with people.
The Side of Guy People Don't Always See
As his television career exploded, so did his larger-than-life image. The spiky blond hair, bowling shirts, and endless trips to Flavortown became part of popular culture. Yet behind the television persona, there has always been another side to Guy Fieri—one that people within the food industry often talk about.
One of the clearest examples was his friendship with the late chef Carl Ruiz. Their chemistry on Food Network shows never felt manufactured. When Ruiz passed away in 2019, Fieri's reaction revealed just how deep that friendship ran. Years later, he still honors Ruiz publicly, a testament to the loyalty and relationships that many people say define him behind the scenes. Every time I watch an episode with Carl and Guy I laugh, smile, and know what I am seeing is genuine (even the pain of the Spicy challenges).
That ability to build genuine relationships would eventually play a major role in another passion of his: premium cigars.
From Cigar Enthusiast to Brand Owner
In 2022, Fieri surprised many people when he officially entered the premium cigar industry. For some, it initially looked like another celebrity endorsement deal. The cigar world has seen plenty of famous names come and go, often with little involvement beyond lending a signature to the band.
But this project quickly proved to be different.
Partnering with master blender Erik Espinosa, Fieri launched Knuckle Sandwich, a cigar line produced in Nicaragua by Espinosa Premium Cigars and named after Fieri’s business empire. Once we got our hands on the cigars, the conversation shifted from celebrity branding to cigar quality. The Habano and Maduro blends demonstrated solid construction, distinctive flavor profiles, and a level of consistency that earned genuine respect from cigar enthusiasts.
Building More Than a Brand
What makes the Knuckle Sandwich story interesting is that it wasn't created overnight. Development reportedly took nearly 18 months, with Fieri remaining involved throughout the process. According to Espinosa, the partnership grew through repeated conversations and a shared passion for premium cigars rather than a quick licensing agreement.
That distinction matters because it helps explain what happened next.
Many celebrity cigar brands launch with fanfare and quietly disappear a few years later. Knuckle Sandwich took a different path. Fieri continued showing up at trade shows, cigar events, and industry gatherings. He once flew from Miami to Boynton Beach for a few hours to attend The Great Smoke, not because he had to, but rather because he wanted to. New releases followed, the brand expanded, and his involvement remained visible. Over time, it became increasingly clear that cigars were more than a side project—they had become part of his business portfolio and personal identity.
The Next Chapter: A Dominican Republic Factory
That's why the latest development feels less like a surprise and more like the natural next step.
In late 2025, Erik Espinosa announced plans to open a new factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The move represented a major milestone for a company historically associated with Nicaraguan production and created new opportunities for blending, sourcing, and future growth.
Then came the announcement that turned heads throughout the industry. During the June 5, 2026 episode of Smoke Night Live, Espinosa revealed that Guy Fieri would be a partner in the Dominican factory venture. Located in Santiago's Free Trade Zone and expected to begin operations in September 2026, the project will also include industry veteran Santana Diaz of Pure Aroma Cigars.
For me, this is the moment that changes the conversation.
Launching a cigar brand is one thing. Investing in a cigar factory is something entirely different.
A factory represents a commitment to tobacco sourcing, production, quality control, staffing, logistics, and long-term industry growth. It is a business decision measured in years and decades, not product launches and marketing cycles. By becoming part of the factory venture, Fieri is moving beyond the role of celebrity partner and stepping into the role of industry stakeholder.
Guy is here and maybe now we will see Flavortown with its own brick and mortar.
